Georgia Woman Recovering from Acid Attack
A woman in Georgia, who suffered severe burns covering about half of her body due to an “unprovoked acid attack,” is now on a long road to recovery. Meanwhile, authorities are still searching for the attacker.
Ashley Wasilewski, aged 46, was returning home near Forsyth Park, a historic area in Savannah, when a man approached her from behind and threw a corrosive liquid on her. This incident occurred just after 8:15 p.m. on December 10, according to the FBI and the Savannah Police Department (SPD).
Upon their arrival at the scene, police noted that Wasilewski’s clothing had melted, and even her car keys were affected. Witnesses reported that her screams were terrifying.
Wasilewski’s son, Westley, expressed confusion about the incident, stating, “We don’t know who did it. She has no enemies. She is a friend to everyone.”
The attack has left Wasilewski with serious injuries, and she is currently receiving treatment at the Augusta Burn Center. A Verified GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support her medical costs.
Currently in stable condition, she will need specialized care, including skin grafts and extended follow-up treatments.
The FBI’s Atlanta office is offering a reward of $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator. Savannah’s Mayor, Van Johnson, mentioned that authorities have identified a “person of interest” who appeared in various images circulated after the attack. This individual, referred to as “Bugs Bunny Man” for wearing a hoodie with the cartoon character, voluntarily came forward but hasn’t been deemed a suspect.
Police are continuing their investigation, collecting doorbell footage from around the area where the incident occurred. Chief Lenny Gunther assured the public that so far, there’s no evidence suggesting this attack is part of a broader pattern or poses an ongoing threat.
The incident has understandably rattled the community, prompting increased patrols in local parks. Johnson stated firmly, “Let me be clear: this type of violence has no place in Savannah.”
For those with any tips or information about the attack, both the Savannah Police Department and the FBI have established a digital tip line.
