Minneapolis Police Chief Stands Up for Undocumented Immigrants

The Minneapolis police chief spoke out about his Catholic beliefs while advocating for undocumented immigrants in response to the Trump administration’s deportation policies.

Chief Brian O’Hara encouraged community members to report any instances of “kidnapping” involving illegal aliens, whether it be by federal officers or impersonators.

“Minneapolis police don’t engage in immigration enforcement. We don’t care about immigration status, and we don’t question people about it.”

He drew parallels between undocumented immigrants today and the Biblical figures Joseph, Mary, and Jesus, who faced scrutiny from authorities during Jesus’ birth.

“Being in a Christian church this morning, especially with Christmas nearing, is deeply personal for me, given my Catholic upbringing,” O’Hara shared. “I reflect on how outsiders have faced similar treatment throughout history. Mary and Joseph were seen as outsiders, forced to stay in a barn!”

O’Hara also pointed to troubling incidents in the city, lamenting how similar horrors have echoed through time. “As we prepare to commemorate this season, it’s hard not to think of those who are marginalized among us,” he said.

O’Hara criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after an incident where two Americans were arrested during a vehicle stop. Reports indicated that ICE officers were overwhelmed by demonstrators, resulting in injuries.

He noted that members of his department were briefly dispatched to assist ICE but later withdrew once the situation was stabilized.

Continuing his defense, O’Hara reassured that people facing immigration-related concerns should feel secure enough to reach out for help. “Our department is dedicated to upholding the dignity of everyone in our community,” he stated.

“People can and should call 911 without fear regarding their immigration status. When they need assistance, they should trust that we’ll respond,” he added.
