Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Shows Support for Somali Community Amid Investigations

In Washington, Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan recently appeared on local television wearing a hijab to show support for the Somali community. This comes in the wake of federal investigations concerning fraudulent activities that reportedly cost taxpayers around $9 billion from the Somali refugee community.

“It’s very clear that the Somali community is integral to Minnesota’s identity,” Flanagan stated during a video appearance with local officials at Carmel Mall in Minneapolis. The segment aired on Somali TV in Minnesota on Thursday.

While encouraging others to shop and support Somali-owned businesses, Flanagan acknowledged the difficult times the community is facing, saying, “I know it’s a scary time right now.” Notably, she wore an Islamic head covering while emphasizing her message of solidarity.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota, responded critically to Flanagan’s appearance, suggesting that it was a disingenuous stunt.

On the same day, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey held a press conference condemning the Trump administration’s immigration policies affecting the Twin Cities, including Carmel Mall, where ICE agents operate. Reports indicated that four individuals were arrested recently.

The U.S. Treasury Department, alongside a prominent House committee, is investigating organizations affiliated with Somalia and other nonprofits in Minnesota, which allegedly defrauded taxpayers out of nearly half of the $18 billion in federal funds allocated to the state since 2018.

Joe Thompson, Minnesota’s top federal prosecutor, commented, “The scale of this cannot be overstated. It’s not just a few individuals committing fraud; it’s a vast, organized scheme.” A significant number of individuals from the nonprofit group Feeding Our Future have been convicted in this fraudulent operation, which reportedly misused over $250 million for luxury items and real estate, with some transactions traced to countries like Kenya and Turkey.

Governor Walz remarked on the situation saying, “This program is intended to enhance lives, but criminals often exploit its loopholes,” indicating the need for vigilance against fraud within aid programs.

Just a month prior, officials connected with the Minnesota Department of Human Services blamed the governor for being “100% responsible for massive fraud.” Walz had faced challenges regarding payments associated with Feeding Our Future and received criticism for his handling of the situation.

In light of intensifying media scrutiny, he announced a fraud task force, underscoring that those who commit fraud against public funds would face serious consequences.

The House Oversight Committee has mandated records from various state officials to assist in its investigation into the ongoing fraud case.

During her visit to Carmel Mall, Flanagan acknowledged Nimko Ahmed, the Somali American state director, referring to her as a long-time friend. Ahmed has admitted to feeling like a double victim as their community grapples with both terrorism and negative stereotypes.

This event was not Flanagan’s first instance of making a statement through her attire. Earlier this year, she wore a “Protect Trans Kids” shirt at a press conference, which also sparked discussion.

As of now, Flanagan is one of three candidates for the 2026 Democratic Senate nomination in Minnesota, following the decision of Senator Tina Smith not to seek re-election.

In response to the tragic violence committed by a transgender gunman at a Catholic school in Minneapolis earlier this year, Flanagan expressed her concern for the victims and their families.

Emmer criticized Flanagan and candidate Angie Craig for allegedly trying to appeal to extreme viewpoints within the Twin Cities. Flanagan’s spokeswoman, Alexandra Fetisov, defended the lieutenant governor’s actions by highlighting that the focus should be on constitutional violations rather than attire.
