Mayor Karen Bass Comments on Hispanic Border Patrol Recruits

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass voiced her disappointment and concern regarding the rising number of Hispanic individuals joining the Border Patrol. She suggested that many are motivated mainly by financial incentives.

“It’s somewhat sad,” Bass remarked in response to a CNN report showing that a significant portion of Border Patrol recruits are Hispanic. In an interview with Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room,” she expressed worry about how these recruits will cope with the realities outside their training.

When addressing the criticism surrounding the apprehension of their own community members, one recruit, Juan Peralta, 20, stated, “They didn’t come the right way. I mean, they’re not my kind.” This highlights the complex views within the agency.

Border Patrol agent Claudio Herrera emphasized his commitment to his duty, asserting, “I’m protecting the community. I protect both sides of the border.” This sentiment reflects pride in the role agents play.

It’s worth noting that over half of Border Patrol agents identify as Hispanic, according to federal data. Mayor Bass attributes this trend primarily to economic motivations.

“We understand that their primary motivation is financial,” she added, reflecting on the broader economic challenges facing many Americans. “This is definitely concerning.”

The funding from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act has enabled the Border Patrol to offer attractive bonuses to new recruits. Some agents can earn up to $60,000 in incentives, which includes $10,000 upon completion of the academy and another $10,000 for remote assignments.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott underscored the agency’s commitment to attracting and retaining qualified individuals, stating, “By offering competitive incentives, we invest in skilled professionals who protect America’s borders.” This approach is aimed at ensuring the agency fulfills its critical mission effectively.
