James Cameron Clarifies Casting Rumors for Avatar

James Cameron, the renowned director, has recently addressed some misconceptions regarding casting in his iconic film, Avatar. In a recent interview, he responded to claims that Matt Damon was offered a role, along with a percentage of the film’s profits, but had to decline due to commitments to another project.

“He was never offered the role,” Cameron stated firmly. He recalled a conversation where Damon expressed a desire to work with him but had to prioritize his role in the Jason Bourne series. Cameron explained that they never got to the details of a potential deal; it was simply a matter of timing and availability.

If profit-sharing had been necessary to secure Damon’s involvement, Cameron insisted, “then it wouldn’t have happened.” Although the opportunity didn’t pan out, Cameron praised Damon for his integrity, noting that Damon reached out personally instead of relying on his representatives.

He described Damon as an “honorable man” and expressed a willingness to collaborate in the future. Cameron reassured him, saying, “You don’t have to blame yourself anymore,” emphasizing that Damon “didn’t miss anything” significant.

Interestingly, Damon has previously stated he was offered a hefty share of Avatar’s profits. He mentioned that Cameron had called him with an offer of 10% of the film, a staggering figure to turn down, but his commitment to the Bourne project kept him from accepting.

Ultimately, the lead role went to Sam Worthington, who reprised his character in subsequent sequels. Avatar went on to achieve staggering success, grossing $2.74 billion globally and briefly reclaiming its spot as the highest-grossing film after a re-release.

Interestingly, Zoe Saldaña, who portrayed Neytiri in the Avatar films, is noted for being the only actress to feature in four films that grossed over $2 billion. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude for being part of such significant projects and the friendships formed along the way.
