Shesterkin’s Performance Lacks Recognition
Once again, Igor Shesterkin’s performance has been overlooked, which has been a recurring theme this season.
In Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against the Islanders, the Rangers’ goalie made an impressive save rate, stopping 24 out of 25 shots. However, he faced another night with little offensive support. Coach Mike Sullivan commented, “I think he’s just quietly making timely saves for us. He’s one of the top goalies in the league and has had an excellent year. But, honestly, we haven’t always provided him with the goal support he probably deserves.”
He continued, “Shesterkin consistently makes the crucial saves we need every night. Having him back gives us significant confidence.”
During his 300th career start, Shesterkin conceded a goal after a defensive zone turnover early on. Still, he made several critical stops to keep the Rangers in the game, notably a remarkable glove save on Islanders forward Jonathan Drouin at the beginning of the third period.
Shesterkin also had to be assessed by the training staff early in the game after a collision with Max Shabanov, following a hooking penalty committed by Braden Schneider. He briefly left the ice after a puck deflected off his mask during the morning skate.
On a brighter note, Adam Fox, who has been on long-term injured reserve, skated in a red non-contact jersey on Saturday.
Fox suffered an upper-body injury in a game against the Lightning on November 29, which kept him sidelined for 13 straight games. Sullivan noted, “He’s getting close. He practiced hard today and will be skating with us on Sunday. Then we’ll see how he progresses.”
In discussing the Islanders rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer, Sullivan expressed excitement, stating, “He’s a really exciting player to watch. I can see him getting even better. What strikes me most is his skating ability; he’s fantastic at initiating breakouts alone.”
