Todd Bowles' position with the Buccaneers as the season unfolds

Todd Bowles Remains Head Coach Despite Buccaneers’ Struggles

Even with the Buccaneers struggling to keep their record above .500, it seems head coach Todd Bowles isn’t in immediate danger of losing his position.

This insight comes from an NFL Network report by Ian Rapoport, who referenced Bowles’ past achievements, indicating that the coach will likely keep his job, even after the team’s disappointing slide from a promising 6-2 start to a current 7-9 record.

“Todd Bowles was given a three-year contract extension before this season, which means he’s locked in until 2028,” Rapoport noted, just before Tampa Bay’s loss to the Dolphins. “They’ve claimed their third consecutive district title and still have the potential for a fourth. Does that sound like someone who’s on shaky ground? Not really.”

Bowles, who served as the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator, stepped up to head coach before the 2022 season, after Bruce Arians transitioned to a consulting role in the organization.

The Buccaneers have secured their fourth NFC South title since 2021. However, concerns about Bowles’ future became apparent when the team stumbled late in the season, losing seven of eight games after a bye week in early November.

After a tight 29-28 defeat against the Falcons earlier this month, Bowles expressed the necessity of being mindful of what isn’t working. “You really must pinpoint the pain areas,” he said. “It should mean something to you. This isn’t just a job; it’s your livelihood. Are you familiar with your role? How effectively can you perform it? There’s no point in sugarcoating things.”

As of the recent 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Tampa Bay was trailing Carolina in the division standings. With both teams falling short in Week 17, all eyes are set on the final game of the season in Tampa. The upcoming clash against their NFC South rival will be a make-or-break situation—the loser will miss out on the playoffs.

Interestingly, Carolina hasn’t claimed a district title since 2015.
