Rangers Face Tough Loss Against Islanders
Manager Artemi Panarin expressed his irritation following the Rangers’ 2-0 defeat to the Islanders, marking their eighth loss in 40 games this season. “Everything has to be resolved,” he stated on Saturday night.
Coach Mike Sullivan also voiced his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance but emphasized the need for positivity as they prepared for a Monday matchup against Carolina. “I don’t think so… obviously, this is not a performance that any of us are proud of. We want to score some goals,” he said after practice in Tarrytown. However, he added, “That being said, I don’t think the situation is hopeless just because we didn’t score last night.”
Despite the loss, Sullivan reassured, “We know we have the ability to score goals. We just need to focus on the positives and pinpoint areas for improvement.” His analysis reflected a desire to build on what works, even in tough times.
Panarin, who is a pending free agent, leads the Rangers with 14 goals and 38 points, although the power play has struggled in recent games—scoring only 5 out of 37 without defenseman Adam Fox, who has been sidelined for 13 games.
Sullivan acknowledged Panarin’s unique talents. “He has the ability to drive attacks. He’s a game-breaker,” he noted, drawing from his experience coaching stars like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. “There are many players like that in the league, but they’re distinct. Bread is one of them.” Sullivan emphasized the need for a tailored coaching approach for such players, allowing them to follow their instincts rather than imposing strict guidelines. “Offensively, we try to be less aggressive,” he added.
On the injury front, Sullivan noted that JT Miller skated alone before Sunday’s practice due to an upper body injury, while Sam Carrick did not participate because of illness.
