Kawhi Leonard Leads Clippers to Victory Over Pistons
Kawhi Leonard put on a spectacular performance as the Los Angeles Clippers upset the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. The Clippers had struggled considerably earlier in the season, while the Pistons were performing quite well in the Eastern Conference. Leonard seemed determined to prove he still had plenty in the tank.
He scored an impressive 55 points in the Clippers’ 112-99 win, hitting 17 of 26 shots from the field and nailing five 3-pointers. He also contributed with 11 rebounds, five steals, and three blocks—marking the first time in his career he scored over 50 points in a game.
This 55-point effort tied the Clippers’ franchise record, previously set by James Harden. Leonard had a shot to break it but participated in only six minutes during the fourth quarter, exiting the game with less than a minute to go.
“I told (Clippers coach Ty Lue) that I’d rather play another game than take the risk of being back out there,” Leonard remarked. “We’ll see if we can win again and find ourselves in a similar situation.”
Harden jokingly suggested it might take Leonard some time to regularly hit that 50-point mark.
Harden praised Leonard’s efficiency, noting how smooth and effortless his performance appeared. He remarked, “He could move wherever he wanted, and it didn’t really matter what the defenders did; he made the shots.” He added that it was great to witness Leonard’s hard work pay off, emphasizing how tough it has been for him to just be himself on the court.
Leonard is gradually finding his rhythm this season, facing issues with his ankle and foot, in addition to ongoing knee problems. Having already sat out ten games this season, he recently played 40 minutes for the first time in a matchup against the Lakers and managed the same workload again on Friday.
“He’s finally healthy and able to log enough minutes to make a noticeable impact,” Lue commented. “When he’s right, he’s among the best in the league. We’ve definitely seen that lately.”
The Clippers are currently enjoying a four-game winning streak and are set to face the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if they can carry this momentum forward.
