Trump Provides Ukraine with Extended Security Promises, Zelenskyy Requests Additional Support

Zelenskiy’s Comments on US Security Support

During a recent meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy indicated that the United States is committed to providing long-term security to Ukraine as part of the ongoing peace discussions. He mentioned on Monday that both nations have agreed on “strong security guarantees,” but he expressed a desire for these guarantees to extend beyond the anticipated 15-year period.

Trump remarked that the two countries are “closer than ever” to reaching an agreement, although some issues remain unresolved, particularly regarding Russia’s territorial aspirations in the Donbas region and the situation surrounding the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Zelenskiy emphasized that without security guarantees, the war is unlikely to come to a conclusion. He communicated this point via WhatsApp, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution.

Ukraine is hesitant to cede any territory, while Russian President Vladimir Putin seems uninterested in resuming post-war negotiations. The day before the meeting, Ukraine experienced a series of missile strikes, which added pressure to the discussions. Trump remained optimistic, stating he is “on the side of peace” and viewed the talks as productive.

Zelenskiy’s response was somewhat muted, expressing doubts about Russia’s willingness to agree to a ceasefire. He stated that Russia has an ongoing desire to control Donbass and that they have long held delusions about Ukraine’s existence.

As of now, neither Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry nor the White House has provided comments regarding the situation.
