This article discusses a recent incident involving the Tennessee Highway Patrol. On Friday, they rescued a woman who was contemplating jumping from a bridge in Sullivan County.
According to a Facebook post by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, multiple agencies were called to assist a woman who was on a bridge along Interstate 81 South, near mile marker 60, overlooking the Holston River.
Law enforcement stated, “She is alive tonight because of people who showed up and cooperated.” A significant number of responders participated: seven Tennessee Highway Patrol units, two units from Sullivan County, the Kingsport Police Department, Sullivan County EMS, plus two teams from the Tennessee Department of Transportation and personnel from Tennessee Parks and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), with some TWRA members positioned in boats beneath the bridge.
A video captured the moment, showing the woman on the bridge ledge with her arms crossed, as officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. Eventually, one officer approached her from behind and successfully pulled her back from the edge.
The woman’s identity has not been disclosed, but she was seen later on a stretcher being attended to by medical personnel.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol remarked, “Various agencies have one mission: save lives, and they did just that.” They emphasized that this time of year can be particularly challenging for many, as hidden struggles like stress, sadness, and loneliness can accumulate. The agency noted this does not indicate weakness; rather, it reflects our shared humanity. They encouraged anyone feeling overwhelmed to remember that “you matter, and help is available.”
In their message, they urged people to check on those who might be struggling. A simple call or text could have a significant impact. They concluded with a reminder that today’s efforts resulted in lives being saved, which is truly vital.
