Andy Reid states his goals for the Chiefs as their dynasty fades

Andy Reid’s Future with the Chiefs Seems Set for Now

Getting Andy Reid to leave the Kansas City Chiefs won’t be easy, especially without a postseason appearance on the horizon.

When questioned on his plans for next year, Reid, who’s 67, responded, “If they’ll take me back, I’ll come back. … I will.” This could suggest a willingness to stay, at least for the immediate future.

His comments come after NFL Network reported that he intends to remain with the team until 2026, despite ongoing retirement speculation. A source mentioned, “He has no intention of leaving.”

Last season, Reid dismissed retirement rumors after the Chiefs fell to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. At that time, he had said, “We’ll see when the time comes” and “Today is not the day.”

This discussion comes on the heels of a disappointing 6-10 season for Kansas City, which concluded without a playoff spot. Key players, including tight end Travis Kelce and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, are recovering from torn ACLs. The timeline for Mahomes’ return remains uncertain.

The once-dominant Chiefs, under Reid’s leadership, had three Super Bowl appearances, including two in the last three years. However, the cracks have started to show. Even prior to Mahomes’ injury against the Chargers on December 14, things were looking precarious for the team.

On a more personal note, Reid is closing in on a significant milestone—he has 279 regular-season wins and could reach 280 when the Chiefs face the Raiders to finish the regular season. He has been at the helm in Kansas City since 2013, which was four years before Mahomes joined the team.

Before Kansas City, Reid spent 14 years coaching the Eagles. With Mahomes still set to be the quarterback, there’s a good chance the Chiefs will continue to be a solid contender as long as Reid is in the picture.

Yet, as change looms—there’s chatter about Kelce possibly retiring and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy considering head coaching opportunities elsewhere—Reid is hoping for at least one more season where he can lead his team back to form.
