House Democrats to Mark Fifth Anniversary of Capitol Riot
House Democrats are set to hold a special hearing on January 6, 2026, to reflect on the grim fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, as announced by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Scheduled for 10 a.m., the hearing aims to underscore the “horror of January 6” and explore the ongoing concern regarding free and fair elections in light of actions taken by the Trump administration.
In a letter to his Democratic colleagues, Jeffries highlighted the importance of remembering the events of that day and honoring the courageous law enforcement officials who were injured or lost their lives defending the rule of law in the United States.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi), who previously led the House Jan. 6 Select Committee, is anticipated to preside over the hearing, marking this significant anniversary.
This development comes amidst some dissent, with a MAGA influencer recently urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to take action against members of the now-defunct Jan. 6 Commission.
The pushback against Bondi and the Justice Department under Trump seems to have prompted Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, to refer to MAGA influencers dismissively.
On his first day in office, President Trump issued pardons to approximately 1,600 individuals charged with crimes related to the Capitol riot. Jeffries pointed out that many of those pardoned have since been arrested for serious offenses, raising alarm.
He has also accused “far-right Republicans in Congress” of efforts to distort the historical account of January 6.
“Thanks to the incredible bravery of the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement officers, the attempt to derail the certification of the 2020 presidential election ultimately failed,” Jeffries stated.
However, the impact was severe, with over 140 police officers injured, some facing lasting physical and emotional challenges.
Top House Democrats are encouraging lawmakers to share their personal stories regarding the riot during the upcoming special hearing next week.
