Airport Security Tray Debate: Should Travelers Help Out?

A TikTok video has ignited a spirited conversation about whether passengers should put used airport security bins away themselves or let airport staff handle it. The video features a traveler arranging empty bins after passing through security, and reactions vary widely among viewers.

The Split Opinions

Many commenters expressed their appreciation for travelers who tidy up. A former airport security guard remarked, “We genuinely love people like you.” Others echoed gratitude, saying things like, “Thank you for being considerate.”

However, not everyone agrees. Some users shared that they’ve been explicitly instructed not to stack the bins. A traveler noted a sign at their home airport in Salt Lake City advising passengers to leave trays on the conveyor belt.

Interestingly, some reflected on a negative experience where they received a reprimand for trying to help. One person recalled, “I got yelled at by the agent who was trying to help me.”

“These trash cans are some of the most germ-rich areas in the airport.”

Etiquette and Expectations

This has opened a discussion around basic etiquette. One user labeled those who leave their trays unstacked as “the biggest annoyance,” while another asserted, “It’s not that hard to clear your trays.”

Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel expert, weighed in. He acknowledged the curtsy of stacking bins but clarified that it’s not mandatory everywhere. In fact, he pointed out that the expectations can vary greatly across different airports. “In some places, you may be asked to stack your bins. Other places might say it’s not necessary,” he noted.

Health Concerns

Leff also advised travelers that if they choose to stack bins, they should definitely use hand sanitizer afterward. Touching the bins can expose them to germs, with a study highlighting that plastic security trays are often linked to respiratory viruses at airports.

“These trash cans are some of the most germ-rich areas in the airport,” he stated, emphasizing the potential health risks involved. The use of nitrile gloves by TSA officers is a plus, but passengers aren’t provided the same protection.

A Trend in the Making

This issue brings to light broader themes in travel etiquette and health safety. Interestingly, just last year, a TikTok trend emerged where travelers showcased aesthetically pleasing arrangements of items inside TSA bins. While some appreciated the artistic flair, others deemed it unsanitary, fearing any negative reactions from fellow passengers.
