A look into the political split between Trump and Musk in 2025

On Inauguration Day, not many in Washington could have imagined that the much-hyped connection between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk would dissolve by year’s end.

By 2025, the political partnership of Trump and Musk had both shined brightly and faded quickly. What began as a joint effort to trim federal spending through the newly established Department of Government Efficiency turned into public disputes and an all-out social media clash.

As we reflect on 2025, it’s worth considering the significant political rifts that have emerged this year.

October 2024 — First Joint Public Appearance

The 2024 presidential election campaign acted as a catalyst for high-profile collaborations.

Following an assassination attempt on Trump at a Pennsylvania rally in July, Musk voiced his support via social media. He later contributed over $200 million to Trump’s campaign through a super PAC. Their first public appearance together came in October, a few months after the incident, during a rally where Musk seemed genuinely thrilled to be on stage with Trump.

November 2024 — Musk Takes Charge of DOGE

With Trump’s victory in the presidential election, Musk was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Trump hailed him as a “star.” Shortly after, both attended a SpaceX launch together.

January 2025 — Inauguration Day

On Inauguration Day, Trump formally designated Musk to head DOGE, aiming to tackle government inefficiencies. Musk joined other tech leaders at the inauguration, marking a significant moment for the new administration.

Early 2025 — DOGE Implements Changes

As Trump’s administration took shape, DOGE sought to achieve Musk’s ambitious goal of reducing the federal budget by up to $2 trillion. By October, they reported saving around $214 billion through various measures. However, this also led to significant layoffs and escalating protests against Musk’s leadership and Trump’s policies.

March 2025 — Trump Buys Tesla

The decline of Tesla’s stock prompted Trump to show support for Musk, turning the White House lawn into a Tesla showroom and purchasing one of Musk’s cars. Trump defended Musk against backlash, stating that the billionaire should not be penalized for being a patriot.

May 2025 — Musk Steps Back from DOGE

By May, Musk started reducing his involvement at DOGE. Regulations allowed public servants like him to work for only a limited number of days, nudging him toward a gradual exit. He marked his last day there with a press conference alongside Trump celebrating his achievements.

June 2025 — The Breakup

Shortly after leaving DOGE, Musk and Trump had a significant falling out. The tension became apparent when Musk criticized a major spending bill, calling it an “abomination.” Trump expressed disappointment and questioned the future of their relationship.

Musk retaliated, asserting that had it not been for him, Trump might have lost the election. He urged the President to consider cuts to electric vehicle incentives in the spending bill.

Things escalated further, with Trump threatening to revoke government subsidies for Musk’s ventures and Musk making severe accusations about Trump. The press secretary called Musk’s conduct unfortunate, framing it as a reaction to not getting his way.

July 2025 — Congress Passes the Bill

After a contentious period, Congress ultimately passed Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk reiterated his disapproval online, prompting Trump to use DOGE’s resources to investigate subsidies for Musk’s companies.

September 2025 — Memorial for Charlie Kirk

Months afterward, Trump and Musk reunited at the memorial service for activist Charlie Kirk, showing some camaraderie despite their recent spats.

October 2025 — Trump Softens His Tone

Later that month on Air Force One, Trump seemed to soften his stance regarding Musk, describing him as a talented individual with some past missteps but still someone he respected.

November 2025 — Musk’s Return to the White House

Musk made an appearance at a White House dinner hosted by Trump, suggesting a potential thaw in their relationship.

December 2025 — What Lies Ahead?

As the year ended, it appeared that the rift between Trump and Musk had solidified. When asked about Musk’s involvement, Trump expressed uncertainty, yet he maintained he still loved him.

Musk has not yet commented on the situation.
