Harris County Treasurer Arrested for Vehicle Burglary
On Saturday, Dr. Carla Wyatt, the Democratic Treasurer of Harris County, Texas, was arrested and charged with vehicle burglary, local news has reported.
Wyatt, who has since been released on bond, was captured on video entering an unlocked minivan. While she claimed to have permission to access the vehicle, the owner stated otherwise, informing the police that he did not know Wyatt and had not granted any such permission.
In an interview with Houston’s KPRC 2, Wyatt voiced her intention to serve as a “role model” for future leaders. Notably, she is the first African American to be elected to this position, as noted by the Harris County Treasurer’s Office.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office acknowledged Wyatt’s arrest and the ongoing investigation, stating they would not comment further while the case is still pending.
Wyatt did not respond swiftly to inquiries for comment. She assumed office in January 2023 and has faced legal complications previously, including a drunk driving arrest earlier this year. Reports indicate that Wyatt had violated her bail conditions multiple times, such as failing to install a required interlock device by set deadlines.
Despite these violations, the DWI charges were dropped in August after she completed a pretrial diversion program.
