A tragic car accident on Monday took the lives of two close individuals connected to boxer Anthony Joshua—trainer Sheena Gami and friend Kevin “Latif” Ayodele. The incident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced their passing in a statement published on X. He reached out to Joshua, expressing his condolences. “AJ, my heart goes out to you on the tragic accident that claimed two precious lives and left others injured,” he shared. “This unimaginable tragedy casts a shadow over this season.”
Tinubu noted that he had a conversation with Joshua, during which he prayed for his recovery. Joshua assured him he was receiving good care. He also connected with Joshua’s mother, who was reportedly very grateful for the support. The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, promised that every effort would be made to ensure Joshua received top-notch treatment.
Recognizing the emotional toll of the situation, Tinubu conveyed his sympathies to Joshua and his family, acknowledging the courage and discipline the boxer has shown throughout his career. He wished Joshua strength and grace during this difficult time while praying for the souls lost in the accident.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps, Joshua was in the back seat of a Lexus SUV that was reportedly exceeding the speed limit. Initial reports indicate that the driver collided with a truck parked along the road. Despite the circumstances, Joshua is reportedly conscious and able to communicate with his family, as announced by the Ogun State Government.
This accident came just days after Joshua won a heavyweight bout against YouTuber Jake Paul.
