NBA icon urges Trump to introduce compulsory military service

Dwight Howard Advocates for Mandatory Military Service

Dwight Howard, a former NBA star, has expressed his thoughts on mandatory military service, suggesting it could instill discipline and structure among Americans. He pointed out that several developed nations, including South Korea and Sweden, enforce compulsory military service, believing it fosters responsible citizenship.

Standing tall at 6’10”, Howard recently urged former President Trump to consider implementing a year of mandatory military service for all U.S. citizens. In his own words, “Honestly, I think the president should require everyone born in America to serve in the military for one year. Many other countries are doing that too. And I think it helps with discipline and structure,” he stated. He even prompted followers for their opinions on the matter, asking, “Will this help America or not?”

Howard engaged with several comments from readers, with one suggesting that this service could take place during high school summers. In response, he emphasized that his vision involved a full year of service for everyone. “I think everyone should do a year,” he reiterated.

When another reader recommended essential customer service roles such as retail or bartending as alternatives, Howard maintained his stance. “I think military service is better,” he asserted. He believes such service equips individuals with self-protection skills and fosters stronger bonds and mutual respect.

After retiring from the NBA, Howard continued his basketball career overseas in Taiwan’s T1 League. Interestingly, Taiwan has a similar military training requirement for men aged 18 to 36, which might have influenced his viewpoint.

Howard also comes from a background that values discipline; his father was a state trooper in Georgia. Around 80 countries worldwide have some form of mandatory military service, including provisions for women in nations like Sudan and Sweden.

What are your thoughts on this topic? Would mandatory military service benefit American society?
