Bridges and Brown: Strengthening Team Communication
In New Orleans, Mikal Bridges feels a deepening connection with coach Mike Brown. He credits their improved relationship to open communication, which has become increasingly vital.
“We’ve had quite a few meetings where we’ve really talked,” Bridges mentioned before the Knicks faced off against the Pelicans, ultimately winning 130-125. “Honestly, I think this is the closest I’ve felt to Mike at this point. We’ve had great conversations—I want to know his thoughts, and he’s open with me too. It’s that back-and-forth that really helps with clarity.”
He added, “Sometimes, you’re just in the heat of the game and don’t understand everything happening. But after a good discussion we had before Christmas, I feel like our rapport has improved. It’s always been solid, but it’s definitely better now.”
When asked if their conversations were more focused on him or the bigger picture, Bridges clarified, “It’s all about the team dynamics, not just me. We’re discussing our strategies, both offensively and defensively. It’s about what we can collectively achieve.”
Brown, who emphasizes the importance of communication, shared that starting this dialogue with Bridges felt timely. “I try to connect with everyone, but sometimes I miss the mark. I think it’s all about finding that balance,” he noted. “Everyone is human; we all need connection. With Mikal, I simply wanted to understand his thoughts and share mine. It’s essential to have that kind of dialogue.”
Bridges has had an efficient season, enjoying more chances in transition and excelling with corner three-pointers. However, his average minutes have dipped from 37 last season to around 35.3 this season.
“Honestly, the reduced minutes have been great for my body. I definitely feel better,” he admitted.
Yet, he also mentioned needing to adapt to the shifting substitution patterns, occasionally questioning if there were issues with his performance. “Even though I’m still logging a lot of time, sometimes I come off the court and think, ‘What’s going on here?’ It’s a strange adjustment, but I’m getting there,” he said. “It’s about creating those bonds with coaches. That can be tough; you might miss shots, make mistakes, or get yanked for another player. You start to second-guess yourself, but sometimes you just need a breather.”
Bridges emphasized how building trust with his coach is crucial for his development. “It’s about having that understanding where if I’m struggling, my coach knows what’s up. And, you know, acknowledging that sometimes a break can be just what you need. Strengthening that communication will go a long way in our relationship.”
Currently, Bridges is averaging 16.7 points with a shooting percentage of 52.3%. Coach Brown has even named him an All-Star candidate. But Bridges, who surprised his teammates with Rolex watches for Christmas, insists that personal growth and developing stronger relationships within the team mean more to him than any accolades.
“Honestly, I can’t control the All-Star selections. I appreciate Mike speaking highly of me and OG [Anunoby], but it’s not something I’m concerned about,” he reflected. “My focus is on improving every game and strengthening my bonds with the team and coaches. I feel like those relationships are solid. Gifting those watches is just a small way I’m connecting with them, and that’s what matters most to me right now.”
