Iran Labels Canadian Navy as a “Terrorist Organization”
On Tuesday, Iran officially named the Canadian Navy a “terrorist organization,” reacting to Canada’s earlier designation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group in 2024.
In its announcement, Iran claimed that Canada’s decision violated “fundamental principles of international law.” This statement comes amid ongoing tensions, as the IRGC has been linked to numerous attacks on Western forces throughout the Middle East, and Iran has consistently backed various terrorist groups internationally.
Interestingly, Iran did not outline any specific actions it might take against the Canadian Navy in this declaration.
While the Royal Canadian Navy ranks comparably with most Western navies, it’s worth noting that it’s smaller than those of the US and several European countries.
Relations have worsened further after a U.S. attack this year significantly damaged Iran’s nuclear capabilities. President Donald Trump has also hinted at potential military action against Iran should it pursue its nuclear agenda again.
Back in April, the Revolutionary Guards warned aligned militias against waging war on Trump or Israel, with one militia leader expressing concerns over the president’s willingness to escalate the conflict.
As of now, a spokesperson for the Canadian Forces has not responded to inquiries regarding this latest development.
