NYPD Officers Dismissed Over Fire Investigation

An NYPD lieutenant and his wife, a patrol officer, were terminated by the Police Commissioner after they failed to cooperate with an investigation into a fire at their Long Island residence, according to official records.

Javier Rodriguez, a retired officer, and his wife Tanya faced disciplinary actions in October for obstructing inquiries concerning the suspicious fire that occurred on September 19, which damaged their East Meadow home. This incident also led Tanya to report her husband missing, as per the newly disclosed NYPD records.

Authorities initially suspected the fire might have been caused by electrical issues. However, later evidence suggested that Javier could potentially be responsible for starting it. Tanya was identified as a witness in the matter.

During the internal affairs hearing, Javier, who has served the NYPD for 20 years, chose not to answer questions, while Tanya provided inconsistent answers and ultimately deferred to her husband’s decisions.

Both officers were suspended and subsequently found guilty in absentia for ignoring questions and direct orders. Records indicate they were fired for not attending required court hearings.

Javier was later discovered on an Amtrak train in Baltimore and brought back to New York City by law enforcement.

The married officers had previously maintained unblemished records within the department. Tanya has been on patrol since 2006, while Javier, recognized for multiple accolades including the 2009 Medal of Valor, had a long tenure as a gang violence unit commander.

Nassau County Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro, investigating the fire, confirmed that foul play has not been ruled out. As of now, Nassau police have not filed any charges in relation to the incident.

Attempts to reach the couple for comments were unsuccessful.
