Andy Reid dismisses retirement rumors and plans to continue coaching in 2026.

Andy Reid’s Coaching Future Under Discussion

Andy Reid has dedicated almost his entire adult life to coaching. With over 25 years in the NFL, he began with the Philadelphia Eagles and currently leads the Kansas City Chiefs. Reid has solidified his legacy in Kansas City with three Super Bowl victories. However, questions have arisen about his future due to his age, the recent injury to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and uncertainties surrounding tight end Travis Kelce, prompting speculation that he might step away as early as 2026.

Even with all these dynamics—like the Chiefs’ absence from the playoffs for the first time since 2014—Reid has confirmed he intends to return in 2026. “If they want me back, I’ll come back. You never know in this business,” he remarked during a call with local journalists, adding a hint of humor about the uncertain landscape of coaching.

It’s rather unusual for Reid, 67, to face such questions in December, a time when the Chiefs would typically be gearing up for playoff games after three consecutive Super Bowl appearances. This year, however, the team’s record stands at 6-10, with the last game against the Las Vegas Raiders approaching.

In April 2024, Reid reportedly signed a five-year, $100 million contract extension with the Chiefs. With a total of 307 career wins, he is just 18 victories shy of surpassing George Halas for third place on the NFL’s all-time wins list, behind Bill Belichick and Don Shula. While Reid’s return appears likely, there are questions about the rest of the coaching staff’s future. For instance, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is in the final year of his contract.

Shortly before Mahomes underwent surgery for his torn ACL and LCL, Reid expressed confidence in Mahomes’ mindset about recovery. “He’s going to approach it like he does everything else,” he said, recalling other quarterbacks who had similar injuries and made successful comebacks. Reid anticipates Mahomes’ recovery will go smoothly, thanks to the excellent rehabilitation resources available.

Travis Kelce also faced retirement questions last season, especially following the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. Yet, a few weeks later, he reassured fans through ESPN host Pat McAfee, confirming, “I’ll be back” for the 2025 season.
