Train crash in Peru injures several US travelers on the way to Machu Picchu

On Tuesday, Peruvian authorities reported a head-on collision between two trains traveling toward Machu Picchu. Tragically, one railway worker lost their life, and many others were injured, including an American tourist. Inspector Jonathan Castillo Gonzalez from the Cusco Police indicated that train services connecting Machu Picchu with Cusco have been suspended in the wake of the accident.

The U.S. Embassy in Peru confirmed receiving news about the incident involving trains moving between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, known more commonly as Machu Picchu Pueblo. These trains primarily ferry tourists visiting one of South America’s most renowned archaeological sites.

“We understand that some Americans have been injured,” the embassy stated, with Peruvian authorities dispatching first responders to the scene. While the full extent of the injuries and the total count of those hurt remains unclear, an official cause for the crash is yet to be identified.

Aguas Calientes, located in a narrow valley along the Urubamba River, acts as the main access point to Machu Picchu; it can mainly be reached by train or hiking. This particular railway route, which connects Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, is vital for thousands of tourists daily, alongside local residents and workers. Ollantaytambo itself, about 72 miles northwest of Cusco, serves as a key transit hub for the Sacred Valley region and is commonly used for trips to Machu Picchu.

In light of the incident, the U.S. Embassy advised anyone needing help following the crash to reach out to iPeru at +51 944-492-314. Currently, all rail traffic between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes is halted. Travelers with upcoming plans are encouraged to touch base with their rail service provider to either reschedule their journey or discuss refund options.

At this moment, it’s uncertain when train services will resume or how many passengers will feel the impact of this suspension.
