Americans urged to remain vigilant amid NYE celebrations
As the New Year’s Eve celebrations approach, a former FBI official is cautioning people to stay alert amidst heightened security measures. Chris Swecker, the former FBI Assistant Director, discussed recent warnings from the Department of Homeland Security and the steps taken by law enforcement to ensure safety during this festive time.
With federal, state, and local agencies increasing their security presence, there’s a palpable sense of concern about potential terrorist threats. However, Swecker emphasized the importance of not letting fear overshadow plans. “We’re not going to give in to terrorist activities,” he stated on a recent segment of “Fox & Friends.”
He pointed out that the potential for terrorism tends to rise around New Year’s celebrations and holidays. He referenced a recent incident where an ISIS-inspired attack took place in New Orleans and a thwarted bombing attempt in Southern California last New Year’s Eve.
In California, a suspect has been arrested for allegedly planning various attacks, including targeting businesses and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. This individual is reportedly linked to an anti-government extremist group.
Regarding overall safety, Swecker urged party-goers to remain cautious but noted the effectiveness of the security forces in major urban areas. “There’s a lot of security in place, especially in New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles,” he said. “Those cities will become virtual fortresses.”
He encouraged individuals to report any suspicious behavior immediately, stressing that intelligence operations are actively ongoing and several threats have already been neutralized. For instance, a recent case saw a Texan charged for providing materials and finances to individuals believed to be associated with ISIS, according to a Department of Justice statement.
