Washington — Bryce Hopkins Makes Impact in St. John’s Win

In his brief tenure at St. John’s, Bryce Hopkins has shown promise, particularly on the offensive end. Yet, he hasn’t quite matched the all-around impact he had on New Year’s Eve.

The Providence transfer truly shined during the Johnnies’ 95-83 victory over Georgetown on Wednesday night, contributing with 10 rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.

“Bryce did a lot of things tonight that aren’t on the stat sheet,” coach Rick Pitino commented. “He was assertive on the boards and really came out with great energy, which energized the whole team.”

Pitino further noted, “He’s had an exceptional two days of practice… We aim for him to be a standout player because that benefits both him and the team, potentially elevating us to new heights.”

Hopkins, standing at 6-foot-7, played a pivotal role in shifting the momentum late in the first half, driving a 21-9 run that changed the course of the game.

His rebounding numbers significantly surpassed his season average, adding a solid presence in that area. “We want to bring that energy and tenacity to our defense every game, as it often translates to our offense,” he reflected, having achieved a team-best plus-21 in just 29 minutes of play.

The Johnnies also recorded a season-high 15 three-pointers, tying the program record for a Big East contest, which is quite an achievement.

In terms of lineup changes, Sadiq Ibine Ayo came off the bench, while Joson Sanon made a start, appearing in the second half of the game.

Lastly, Vince Iwchukwu, who recently transferred to St. John’s, remained with Georgetown, as he has been out since mid-November due to a medical procedure.
