Tatsuya Imai Joins Astros in Major Deal
Japan’s leading pitcher is officially off the market.
Reports from Jon Heyman indicate that Tatsuya Imai has signed a contract with the Astros.
This deal spans three years and includes opt-out options after each season, potentially worth up to $63 million, as noted by The Athletic.
The Yankees had shown interest in Imai, who is known for his impressive pitching skills.
Imai, at 27, becomes the third notable Japanese pitcher to move to MLB in recent years, joining Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Aki Sasaki.
Unlike those two, who both joined the Dodgers and contributed to their consecutive World Series victories, Imai sought to create his own path.
He faced a 45-day deadline to sign, initially set to close on January 2.
In a conversation with Japanese media, Imai expressed a desire to take down the Dodgers. “Of course, it’s fun to play with Shohei Ohtani, Yamamoto, and Sasaki, but to beat a team like that and become a world champion is the most rewarding thing in my life,” he stated.
Imai’s fastball can reach 99 mph, and over the past two years with the Seibu Lions in Japan, he has maintained a 2.14 ERA.
He has steadily increased his strikeout rate, recording 187 strikeouts in 173 1/3 innings in 2024 and 178 punchouts over 163 2/3 innings last season.
Across his career in Japan, Imai has played in 187 games, accumulating 1,045 strikeouts and a 3.07 ERA in 1,077 2/3 innings.
His statistics position him among the standout free agents in a class that includes solid options like Dylan Cease, Framber Valdez, and Rangers Suarez, though none are considered aces.
After a surprising run to Game 7 of the World Series, the Blue Jays made headlines by signing another pitcher for seven years at $210 million, which involved a record transfer fee.
“We have a 27-year-old pitcher who throws 98, 99,” commented agent Scott Boras during the winter meetings in Orlando. He added that teams have reacted enthusiastically to Imai’s breakout and career potential.
