Disruption at Kansas City International Airport
On New Year’s Eve, a traveler caused a scene at Kansas City International Airport, making threats toward a female Southwest Airlines employee while cursing loudly. This chaotic incident was caught on video and began around 11:30 a.m. at a Southwest Airlines counter.
In the footage shared on social media by a user named Collin Rugg, the man can be heard hurling insults at the staff and claiming, “I’m from England, no!” He continued to direct threats at the women working behind the counter.
The roughly four-minute clip shows the man placing his hand on the employee’s computer screen while she warned him to step back. When she indicated that she would call the police, he responded with, “I don’t care about getting arrested, damn it!” and continued to make violent threats.
As he exchanged harsh words with a male employee who stood nearby, the man boldly leaned in, asserting, “This counter won’t save you!” He also suggested that he could have caused harm had he wanted to, addressing the employee directly.
While nearby passengers looked on, he shouted at other female employees and made further threats. Witnesses reported that the turmoil spilled over to the gate area, where travelers rushed in to support the employees.
The female employee then took out her phone to call for help, prompting the man to approach her workstation aggressively. Two of her colleagues intervened, positioning themselves between her and the angry passenger, who kept shouting.
Despite various attempts by onlookers to de-escalate the situation, the man’s agitation grew, particularly as he complained about delays since 5:30 that morning. Another man in a baseball cap approached him, but the woman recording the altercation urged the unruly traveler to “shut up.”
As tensions peaked, bystanders tried to keep peace, urging them not to provoke further conflict. Yet, even as he was being pulled away from the scene, the man yelled derogatory comments at those trying to help.
According to Rugg, the man was later arrested. The airport officials stated that the incident occurred amidst an extensive safety investigation, briefly disrupting operations at the facility.
In an update, the Kansas City Aviation Authority confirmed that the airport had resumed normal operations after law enforcement and the FBI cleared the area. Officials indicated that the situation was carefully evaluated and that travelers in the vicinity were evacuated to ensure safety.
The FBI later stated there was no “credible threat” to the airport or anyone inside. Following the resolution of the incident, the Aviation Authority staff worked to minimize disruption for travelers.
Earlier that day, the airport had been looking into a potential threat, collaborating closely with the FBI to assess the situation. No arrests were reported in relation to the earlier disturbances, and it remains unclear if the man in the video was taken into custody.
