Greg McElroy’s Misstep During Commentary

On Thursday, college football announcer Greg McElroy made a rather unfortunate mistake. While commentating on the Ole Miss vs. Georgia game, he mistakenly referred to Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy as Kylen Lacy, the former LSU receiver who tragically died by suicide last April.

“I love the way Kylen Lacy runs,” McElroy said, before quickly correcting himself. “I mean, he does—Kewan Lacy.”

Kylen passed away on April 12, 2025, at just 24 years old, during a car chase in Houston; his death was later ruled a suicide.

His life had already seen turmoil before his passing, following his arrest in December after a car accident that claimed the life of 78-year-old Herman Hall in Louisiana.

A video released by the Louisiana State Police shows the moments leading up to the incident, with Kylen’s lawyer previously presenting footage to suggest that his vehicle was “approximately 72 yards” from the crash scene, attempting to argue for his innocence.

He faced charges that included manslaughter, hit-and-run, and reckless driving, turning himself in and later being released on a $151,000 bail.

Kylen’s death occurred just two days before a scheduled grand jury hearing regarding that accident.

Police narrated the video, detailing how a green Dodge Charger was seen speeding in opposing lanes, maneuvering past several cars and an 18-wheeler in a no-passing zone before the crash occurred.

Meanwhile, Kewan Lacy, the Rebels’ standout sophomore running back, had an impressive game, rushing for 98 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, contributing significantly to the Rebels’ win over No. 3 Georgia.

This season, he achieved a total of 1,464 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns.

Looking ahead, No. 6 Ole Miss is set to take on No. 10 Miami in the College Football Playoff semifinals next Thursday. The winner will face the victor of the matchup between No. 1 Indiana and No. 5 Oregon.
