18-Year-Old Intended ISIS-Inspired New Year's Eve Stabbing at NC Grocery Store

Young Man Accused of Planning Attack in North Carolina

Federal authorities have charged an 18-year-old from Mint Hill, North Carolina, with plotting an attack on a grocery store on New Year’s Eve, allegedly in support of the Islamic State (ISIS).

According to reports, the FBI intervened to stop this suspected plan, and their ongoing work during the holiday season highlights their commitment to public safety. FBI Director Kash Patel commented that the agency works continuously to protect Americans and praised the efforts of local law enforcement in thwarting this threat.

Officials revealed that Sturdivant’s intended targets included grocery stores and fast food restaurants. His interest in ISIS reportedly began with online research, including reading materials from the group’s website and creating content for TikTok.

Authorities further noted that Sturdivant had been communicating with someone who he believed was affiliated with ISIS, though that individual was actually an undercover government agent. During these interactions, he shared images of weapons, including a hammer and a knife.

Sturdivant allegedly expressed intentions to commit violent acts, mentioning he was “going to do jihad soon,” hinting at his commitment to ISIS’s ideology.

After searching his residence, officers discovered handwritten notes related to his plans. One list indicated a desire to harm as many people as possible, suggesting he sought to die as a martyr during the attack.

The young man now faces charges for attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, as explained by Russ Ferguson, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding domestic threats, following a similar thwarted plot in December targeting a New Year’s Eve event in Los Angeles.
