Government Employees Kick Off the New Year with a Lawsuit Against Trump Regarding the Halt of Taxpayer-Funded Gender Reassignment Procedures

HRC Files Class-Action Lawsuit Over Insurance Cuts

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) has initiated a class-action lawsuit aimed at federal employees in response to the government’s recent decision to halt insurance coverage for sex-reassignment hormones and surgeries.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) issued a letter in August, notifying insurance companies that starting in 2026, “chemical and surgical alterations of an individual’s sexual characteristics through medical intervention (including ‘sex reassignment’ services) will no longer be covered by health insurance for federal employees,” aside from counseling and certain treatments. The federal employees assert that this policy change constitutes “discrimination” by effectively denying them necessary healthcare based on gender identity.

Kelly Robinson, president of the HRC Foundation, expressed concern, stating, “Starting today, countless federal employees and their families will be left out to dry at the hands of a shameless administration intent on targeting the transgender community. This policy is not about cost or care; it is about pushing transgender individuals and their families out of the federal workforce.”

Robinson described the situation as pure discrimination, emphasizing that the HRC Foundation is committed to fighting against it.

The HRC also highlighted that treatment for transgender individuals is considered “medically necessary” and is backed by major medical and mental health organizations as the best approach to care. Moreover, many employees rely on insurance coverage for their dependents as well.

One federal employee involved in the lawsuit pointed out the necessity of insurance to help fund his daughter’s puberty blockers and future hormone replacement therapy.

In June 2025, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Tennessee’s law that bans transgender procedures for minors. This decision prompted additional states to impose similar restrictions. Notably, several countries, including the UK, have suspended the use of puberty blockers in minors after experts raised concerns about significant safety risks.
