Jelly Roll Discusses Weight Loss Journey
Jelly Roll recently opened up about his weight loss journey and the steps he’s taken to achieve better health. In a candid interview, the 41-year-old country artist shared how he decided to take control of his life and embrace a healthier lifestyle.
He began working with Gary Brecka, the founder of the health initiative Ultimate Human, and later connected with Ways2Well, a health clinic that delves deeper into underlying health issues instead of merely addressing symptoms. “The first few blood panels were shocking,” he recalled.
Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason Bradley Deford, revealed alarming health markers: high insulin levels, very low testosterone, and elevated cholesterol and A1C levels. “It was a wake-up call,” he reflected. “Seeing those numbers really hit me. I thought, ‘Is this my testosterone level?’ I couldn’t believe it. I mean, we’re talking about being at 57.”
He emphasized that his main goal wasn’t just weight loss but understanding his body better. He recognized that while weight loss would likely follow, his focus was truly on health. Alongside physical health, he acknowledged the importance of addressing mental health, admitting that he sought therapy for overeating.
“I started to treat my food addiction like how I treated my addiction to cocaine. I sought help and made some tough emotional choices,” he explained. “Once I framed food addiction in the same light, I began to see real change. It made me question the reasons behind my eating habits.”
Reflecting on his past, he mentioned that he initially went down the wrong path as a teenager, feeling the need to prove his toughness. This ultimately led to time spent in prison due to drug-related offenses, where he discovered religion, earned his GED, and started writing music. “It took years for me to realize that lifestyle wasn’t who I really was,” he stated.
“Shame can manifest in unexpected ways,” he added later. “Sometimes it shows up as pride or bravado. Deep down, I was the loudest and biggest, but underneath it all, I was struggling.” Jelly Roll has previously shared that he lost 300 pounds since embarking on this transformation in 2022 when he initially weighed over 500 pounds.
In December 2024, he revealed his aspirations on Bunny XO’s podcast, stating his goal to be featured on the cover of a prominent health magazine by March 2026. “That’s my motivation for change,” he expressed.
The artist described his heaviest days as filled with “endless sadness,” feeling confined by his weight. But now, he feels a sense of liberation, sharing, “A few months back, I couldn’t even run a mile. Now, I can do it in just over 12 minutes.”
