Bishop Robert Barron criticizes Zohran Mamdani's comment on 'the warmth of collectivism': 'For God’s sake'

Bishop Robert Barron, a notable Catholic figure, has expressed discontent over New York City’s new socialist Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s remarks about “collectivist warmth” during his inaugural speech. Barron, who is known for his podcasting and the founding of Word on Fire, simply stated, “Please spare me.”

Mamdani, marking his position as the first Muslim mayor of New York, proclaimed, “We will replace the ruthlessness of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism,” a phrase that triggered immediate criticism from conservatives concerned about such wording from the leader of the nation’s largest city.

Barron described Mamdani’s statement as astonishing, remarking that his aim to replace “the coldness of rugged individualism” with “the warmth of collectivism” was deeply troubling, pointing out the historical consequences of such ideologies, which he claims have led to the deaths of over 100 million in the past century.

“Please forgive me for the ‘warmth of collectivism,'” Barron continued, highlighting the dire conditions in nations under socialist or communist regimes like Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea. He underscored that Catholic social teachings have traditionally criticized socialism, favoring a market economy, which Mamdani tends to mock as ‘wild individualism.’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also weighed in on the discussion via social media, stating that the “warmth” of collectivism universally demands “coercion and force,” and posed the question of how many lives have been lost to collectivist ideologies over the last century.

Senator Ted Cruz echoed similar sentiments, asserting that “individual rights are — always — stripped away when communists are in power.” Meanwhile, Mamdani has already taken controversial measures since assuming office, targeting urban landlords and housing developers with new executive orders.

Among these orders, Mamdani initiated three related to housing. One mandates accountability from landlords for unsafe living conditions, while another establishes the LIFT Task Force, aimed at optimizing the use of city-owned lands to expedite housing development.

Additionally, he introduced the SPEED Task Force, designed to eliminate permitting obstacles that hinder home construction, both initiatives being overseen by Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning, Lila Joseph.

Mamdani has faced backlash for repealing directives from his predecessor, Mayor Eric Adams, which included a ban on city officials boycotting or divesting from Israel. He has also rescinded another order directing the NYPD to create protest-free zones around religious institutions, a move that has drawn criticism from some right-wing Jewish leaders.

Critics, including Representative Elise Stefanik, have accused Mamdani of supporting terrorism, citing his descriptions of Israel as an apartheid state and calls for the arrest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Nonetheless, Mamdani has pledged to combat anti-Semitism in New York and increase funding to address hate crimes.

Attempts to contact Mamdani’s office for a response by Fox News Digital went unanswered.
