Tragic Discovery in Alabama: Missing Boy Found Dead
A 4-year-old boy from Florida, who had gone missing with his dog, was tragically found dead on New Year’s Eve while visiting his father in Alabama.
Jonathan Boley’s body was located by authorities on Friday afternoon in a wooded area a couple of miles away from his home. His faithful black Labrador mix, Buck, was found alive next to him after a thorough search lasting three days, as reported.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that we have found Jonathan, and he has sadly passed away,” Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith shared with reporters. “Like many in our community, we are shocked by this news,” he added, remembering Jonathan as a spirited boy who loved the outdoors.
Known affectionately as “Jon John,” Boley lived with his mother in Florida following his parents’ separation. He was visiting his father in Jasper, Alabama, which is roughly 80 miles northwest of Birmingham when he went missing.
Smith mentioned that Jonathan was last seen around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, playing outside near the fence with his older brother and dog.
According to the brother, both he and Buck crossed the fence line in the 7000 block of Highway 195.
His father, Jameson Kyle Boley, reported his son missing shortly before 12:30 p.m.
At the time of his disappearance, the boy was wearing a yellow Mickey Mouse shirt, black pants, and Paw Patrol shoes.
Authorities were concerned that Boley was “in danger,” leading multiple agencies to initiate a search for the boy.
The Walker County Sheriff’s Office, with aid from the FBI and local police departments, conducted a three-day search using drones, helicopters, tracking dogs, and divers who scoured a nearby pond.
Jonathan’s mother came to Alabama soon after her son went missing.
Smith noted, “The mother arrived from Florida last night. We spoke with her, and she assisted us as best she could.”
Details about the cause of Jonathan’s death are still pending.
During the search operation on Wednesday, authorities had to end their work near Jameson Boley’s home after explosives were found on the site.
Jameson Boley, 40, was arrested on charges of illegally manufacturing a destructive device and chemically endangering a child. Smith clarified that these charges were unrelated to Jonathan’s disappearance and death. He mentioned that the ongoing situation complicated the search, noting that they were required to wait for certain explosives to be dealt with before conducting a thorough search of the property.
Community members were advised against assisting in the search due to the hazardous situation posed by the presence of at least eight explosive devices discovered there.
Residents reported having heard explosions in the area, with one call made around 4 a.m. on the day prior to Jonathan going missing.
Smith mentioned his father is a military veteran and shared that neighbors had expressed hearing explosions for several weeks, though the exact source remained unclear.
He extended gratitude to the “hundreds” of volunteers who joined the search, emphasizing the challenges posed by harsh weather conditions and difficult terrain. “All the investigators and volunteers… they truly worked hard over the last two days in their efforts to find Jonathan,” he remarked.
