Coach’s Frustration After Controversial Loss

Micah Shrewsbury, the head coach of Notre Dame’s men’s basketball team, made headlines following a highly charged moment during a recent game against California.

After a narrow 72-71 defeat, Shrewsbury was visibly agitated and attempted to confront the referees. His assistant had to hold him back as he aimed to reach the officials after a pivotal four-point play with just five seconds remaining, which ultimately sealed the game for the Golden Bears.

The tension escalated after Notre Dame had gained a four-point lead with only 16 seconds on the clock. Yet, in a dramatic turn of events, they allowed California to go on a seven-point run within those closing moments, leaving their record at 10-5 and 1-1 in ACC play.

Just moments prior, Notre Dame was ahead at 69-65, but succumbed to a three-pointer with 11 seconds left. Although the Fighting Irish made two free throws shortly afterward to close the gap, California had already seized control of the game.

The situation worsened when a foul was called against Logan Imes on Dai Dai Ames during a three-point attempt, tying the game at 71-71 with just five seconds left.

This led to a chaotic scene with Shrewsbury chasing after the referees. Initially, the officials reversed their call, stating that the foul occurred prior to the shot, thus nullifying the basket. However, California’s coach, Mark Madsen, argued that the foul happened during the shooting motion, persuading the refs to revert back to the original call.

Ames then capitalized on the opportunity, sinking a free throw to complete the four-point play, after which Notre Dame’s last attempt at a three-pointer fell short, marking a shocking end to the game.

Madsen reflected on the heated atmosphere, noting, “I thought there was a foul. I saw the referee give the signal. There were a lot of emotions in that gym.” He expressed gratitude for Ames’s composure in making the shot and the subsequent free throw.

As the ball barely slipped from Notre Dame’s grasp, Shrewsbury’s frustration was evident as he charged towards the officials again. His actions may prompt the ACC to consider disciplinary measures. Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish will have a week off to regroup before their next game against Clemson at home.
