The late-night issue and additional topics: Letters

late night suicide

Since President Trump emerged on the political scene, late-night comedians seem to have strayed from their original goal of just making us laugh (“A Year Too Long Is Wrong,” Kirsten Fleming, December 30).

What they often call “humor” comes off more like a daily lecture on moral superiority. It’s kind of like, well, a fart—you notice it, but the novelty quickly fades. Maybe that’s why their viewership is sliding.

turnstile trap

I can’t help but wonder why some subway riders skip out on paying their fares, unlike the rest of the hardworking city. (“Trapped-hanger pain,” Dec. 27).

If you find yourself stuck at a turnstile, maybe it’s time to rethink your strategy.

Brown U failure

The opinion piece by former NYC detective Pat Brosnan was spot on regarding the issues at hand (“Brown’s Fatal Mistake” Post-Opinion, Dec. 27).

The absence of modern technology at this so-called woke university borders on criminal negligence. Reliable leadership should be called into question—it’s really something when the campus administrator reporting the shooting is the only one who appears to have any common sense.

Reforming this Ivy League institution can’t come soon enough.

Natural gas dangers

A recent editorial took aim at Governor Hochul’s energy policy favoring renewables and battery storage, arguing that New York needs to rush towards reliable natural gas power plants (“Governor Hochul’s Toxic Battery Farm ‘Fix'” editorial, December 29).

However, natural gas actually poses significant health risks for New Yorkers, more so than renewable resources or battery solutions. Burning natural gas releases harmful air pollutants and cancer-causing chemicals that can affect health over the long term.

Short-term fixes might sound good on paper, but it’s crucial to prioritize public health in future government policies.

wasteful expense

A shoutout to Sen. Rand Paul for shining a light on government waste (“Drunk Ferrets: Your Taxpayers Are Working,” editorial, Dec. 29).

At least someone is keeping an eye on how taxpayer money is being spent.

Also, the whole idea of force-feeding ferrets alcohol or giving cocaine to puppies raises serious concerns about animal cruelty and needs further investigation.

TDS strikes again

Mainstream media has been quick to label the Venezuelan speedboat’s “breakout” as a drug trafficking incident (“CIA raids Treng Beng drug pier,” December 31).

These left-leaning outlets seem to know the attacks are backed by solid intelligence from US special forces and the CIA. Yet, their objective appears to be to cast doubt on President Trump and his administration whenever possible.
