ACC Addresses Notre Dame Coach’s Actions After Loss

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has issued a “public reprimand” to Notre Dame basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry following his outburst after a tight 72-71 defeat to Cal on Friday.

According to the ACC, “Shrewsberry aggressively confronted a member of the officiating staff after the game.” The statement emphasized that such unsportsmanlike conduct is unacceptable and detracts from the integrity of the game.

Despite the reprimand, Shrewsberry will not face suspension or any fines.

The game had a dramatic finish; with just five seconds left, Cal’s Dai Dai Ames made a three-pointer to even the score. However, he was fouled during the attempt.

Interestingly, before Ames could take the accompanying free throw, the referee initially overturned the call, then reinstated it, allowing the bucket to count.

As Ames transitioned up the court, Notre Dame defender Logan Imes tried to foul him to prevent a tied score, but things took a turn. When Ames took his shot from near the arc, the referee blew the whistle and called a foul.

Ames converted the free throw, which ultimately secured Cal’s victory.

In the chaotic aftermath, Shrewsberry became visibly upset, lunging toward the officials as the game concluded. Coaches and players from Notre Dame had to intervene to restrain him during this unsettling scene.

On Saturday morning, Shrewsberry addressed the incident, issuing an apology. “I want to apologize for my actions immediately after last night’s game against California,” he stated. “My behavior was inappropriate and does not reflect the kind of leader I strive to be, nor does it align with what the University of Notre Dame expects from its coaches. I recognize my lack of judgment and will strive to improve in the future. My conduct was unacceptable, and I want to extend my apologies to our team, the university, Coach Madsen and his squad, and the ACC.”
