Rangers Seek Momentum After Outdoor Victory
The Rangers have more outdoor game wins historically than they did at Madison Square Garden in the 2025-26 season.
Having showcased their skills against the Panthers during the Winter Classic, the Blueshirts are optimistic this victory could signal a new phase in their season. It’s crucial they continue this momentum when they face the Mammoths at home on Monday night.
Interestingly, the Rangers last secured a regulation win at MSG over a month ago, specifically against the Blues on November 24.
This season, because of the NHL’s tight schedule leading up to the Olympics, the Rangers haven’t enjoyed many lengthy home stays. In fact, this upcoming five-game stretch is as close as they’ve come to a significant homestand.
Out of those five games, four are set to take place at the Garden, with one interruption for an away game at TD Garden in Boston. There’s been a lot of chatter about the underdog Rangers playing in front of their home crowd, and perhaps this stretch could quiet those discussions a bit.
Head coach Mike Sullivan expressed on Friday, “I think sometimes it’s a lot easier to sell a message of simplicity when you’re playing on the road. There’s a value in simplicity in today’s game. When you play straight, you put the puck behind your opponent, establish the forecheck, and defend hard. When all those elements come together, suddenly you become a challenging team to play against.”
As they headed into Saturday’s game, the Rangers found themselves tied with the Kings for the second-fewest home wins in the NHL—just five. The only team trailing them was the Canucks, who managed only four.
The Rangers also hold the league’s record for the fewest regulation wins, tallying just two. Moreover, with only 34 goals scored at MSG, they lag behind; the Kings are the next lowest with 41.
After taking Saturday off, the Rangers were expected to resume practice at the MSG Training Center on Sunday.
Interestingly, the Rangers lead the NHL with six wins in outdoor games, trailing only Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in terms of total outdoor games played, and still behind Chicago’s seven.
