Tragic Murder of North Carolina Teacher During Home Invasion
A respected science teacher from North Carolina was tragically killed by an intruder with a criminal history while she was on a call with 911.
Zoe Welsh, who had dedicated two decades to teaching, was discovered with severe injuries early on Saturday morning after authorities responded to a burglary report at her residence in Raleigh. Police stated that Welsh had called for help, indicating there was an unauthorized person in her home, but while she was speaking with the dispatcher, the attacker violently assaulted her.
She was rushed to a hospital but unfortunately did not survive her injuries.
Shortly after the incident, 36-year-old Ryan Camacho was apprehended nearby and is currently facing charges of felony murder and robbery.
Camacho has a troubling history, featuring at least 20 arrests; he was convicted in 2021 for escaping from a prison in Salisbury, North Carolina, as noted in court records. Just a month prior, another case involving theft and trespassing against him was dismissed by a Wake County judge, who determined he was unable to proceed.
Although the assistant district attorney attempted to have Camacho admit to the crime voluntarily, this request was denied by the court.
He is set to appear in court on Monday, while Welsh’s friends are adamant about seeking justice. Olivia Alvarez, a friend who had worked as a cleaner in Welsh’s home, expressed her sorrow, saying, “I love you so much, Zoe, you’re with God right now, and this guy’s going to pay.” She also shared her fear knowing that someone had invaded a space she frequented each week.
Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce offered his condolences, stating, “My heart breaks for this mother, friend, and mentor to so many in our community, and the unimaginable trauma that her family has had to endure.” He conveyed his deepest sympathies to Welsh’s family during this challenging period.
The school community, where Welsh taught Advanced Placement Biology and Forensic Science since 2006 at Ravenscroft School, is also mourning her loss. A spokesperson indicated that Welsh’s impact was deeply felt by those who worked alongside her and within her classroom.
Although specific details about her injuries were not disclosed, Welsh had been a teacher since 1992. Grief counselors were planned to be available at the school for students and staff come Monday.
Meanwhile, the investigation into this heartbreaking event is ongoing.
