Novak Djokovic withdrawing from PTPA in surprising news

Novak Djokovic Ends Association with PTPA

Novak Djokovic has decided to part ways with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the group he co-founded. He announced this on social media, stating, “my values and approach are no longer aligned with the organization’s current direction.”

Back in 2020 at the US Open, Djokovic and retired Canadian player Vasek Pospisil launched the PTPA. Their vision was to advocate for players who often operate as independent contractors in the sport.

One intention, I think, was to evolve the organization into a more structured union-like body, potentially to negotiate collective bargaining agreements, similar to those seen in team sports. However, that hasn’t been realized just yet.

Djokovic voiced his concerns about “transparency, governance and how my voice and image is represented,” during a discussion on the X program.

Earlier this year, the PTPA initiated a class action lawsuit against both the men’s and women’s tours, as well as the International Tennis Federation and the Sporting Integrity Authority. They accused these bodies of “systematic abuse, anti-competitive practices and a blatant disregard for player welfare.” Notably, the Big Four was later included as a defendant in the case.

Interestingly, Djokovic himself wasn’t listed as one of the plaintiffs when the suit was filed, along with Pospisil and several other players.

In a previous statement, he mentioned, “I want other players to step up,” indicating a shift in responsibility among players.

The lawsuit argues for higher earnings for players, claiming that the governing bodies of major tournaments like Wimbledon and the US Open limit prize money and restrict players’ off-court earning potential.

Looking ahead, Djokovic commented, “I will continue to focus on my tennis, my family, and contributing to the sport in a way that reflects my principles and integrity. I wish the players and officials all the best moving forward, but for me this chapter is over.”
