Ben Shelton Faces Tough Loss at Wimbledon

LONDON — Ben Shelton, ranked fourth, experienced a heartbreaking defeat against qualifier Otto Virtanen at Wimbledon, referring to it as “one of the toughest losses of my career.” The match concluded with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (9), marking Shelton’s first-ever first-round exit from a grass-court Grand Slam.

The 23-year-old American had a promising lead at 8-5 in the decisive tiebreaker and even reached match point at 9-8. Unfortunately, he made an unforced error and then lost the next two points.

“He put himself in a great position to win at the end. He came up with a good one,” Shelton reflected, noting his previous success at the All England Club, where he reached the quarterfinals last year. Despite his efforts, he remarked, “I didn’t get many free points.”

The left-hander acknowledged Virtanen’s aggressive play: “The way he played, the way he hit the ball, he definitely forced my hands. He wasn’t really making any mistakes. In the last game before the tiebreak, even when I left the ball half-hanging, he was picking up winners.” Shelton continued, saying he aimed to pressure Virtanen by getting close to the net during the tiebreak.

Virtanen, 25, advanced from the qualifying rounds and celebrated what many would consider the biggest win of his career, taking down the fifth-ranked Shelton.

“It’s been a great month. We played a lot of grass matches,” Virtanen shared in an on-court interview after a grueling 4 hours and 21 minutes on the second court. He had previously reached the second round in his Wimbledon debut but missed the tournament last year.

After this setback, Shelton plans to shake off the disappointment quickly. “I’m usually the type of person to get back on the court or in the gym the next day,” he said. “This is definitely one of the toughest losses of my career. Things just didn’t go my way today. I’ll be right back on the practice court in the next few days.”
