Medical Student Charged After Subway Incident
A 29-year-old medical student is facing several charges, including attempted murder, after allegedly pushing a 73-year-old man onto a moving subway train in the Bronx on January 1st.
Anton Aleshin has also been charged with assault, reckless endangerment, and harassment related to the incident, which took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. at the 161st Street Yankee Stadium subway station, according to reports.
Authorities state that Julio Figueroa was standing on the platform when Aleshin approached and pushed him onto a southbound train that had just arrived. Figueroa hit the train and then fell onto the platform, resulting in head injuries and scratches on his face.
As reported, Figueroa, a grandfather of 17, is currently in the ICU at Lincoln Hospital. His niece, Venice Fahr, expressed confusion over the attack, saying, “It made no sense.” She further noted that her uncle “doesn’t really remember what happened.”
Aleshin has pleaded not guilty, and a judge has ordered him to be held without bail. He is expected to return to court on January 6. Prosecutors mentioned that he is part of a training program at Brookdale University Hospital. Previously, Aleshin worked as a doctor in Russia for 11 years, as stated by law enforcement sources.
According to the National Provider Identifier (NPI) database, Aleshin is enrolled in an organized medical training program as of July 2024. Police indicated that he did not know Figueroa and that the alleged attack was unprovoked.
Brookdale University Hospital’s representatives declined to comment on the situation when contacted. The NYPD has not provided an immediate response to inquiries.
