Progressive Democrats label Trump's seizure of Maduro as grounds for impeachment

The tension surrounding this year’s midterm elections is escalating, as several Democratic lawmakers have publicly labeled President Trump’s initiative to detain Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro as an “impeachable crime.”

Rep. Dan Goldman from New York, who is facing significant pressure from the left, stated, “This violation of the U.S. Constitution is indeed an impeachable offense.” He urged his Republican colleagues to join Democrats in holding the president accountable for what he termed a blatant abuse of power.

Last year, efforts to introduce a War Powers Act resolution to restrict Trump’s military actions against Venezuela were unsuccessful in Congress.

Rep. Delia Ramirez from Illinois accused the Trump administration of “pulling us into endless illegal wars,” suggesting that resources are being exploited for wealth expansion. She emphasized the need for Congressman Ilhan Omar’s War Powers Resolution to pass and reiterated the call for impeachment.

In a related tweet, Ramirez expressed that many Americans feel a sense of déjà vu regarding military interventions cloaked in the guise of freedom, which ultimately lead to exploitation.

Kat Abu-Ghazaleh, a left-leaning candidate vying for Illinois’ 9th Congressional District, echoed calls for impeachment, criticizing Trump’s actions as an attempt to involve the nation in another prolonged conflict without Congressional ratification.

Rep. April McClain Delaney remarked on X, stating that engaging in actions against another country without Congressional approval qualifies as an impeachable act. However, she noted that deciding whether to pursue impeachment should be a carefully considered tactical choice among their caucus.

Democratic leaders accused Trump of breaching the law but stopped short of labeling his actions as impeachable. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer pointed out the lack of Congressional authorization, a sentiment shared by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Supporters of Trump are wary that if Democrats regain control of the House after the upcoming elections, impeachment efforts could intensify for a third time.

Conversely, some Democrats, like Sen. John Fetterman, expressed a different perspective, questioning why acknowledging the legality of the operation appears so contentious.

Proponents of Trump’s decision to detain Maduro highlight historical precedents, referencing similar military actions, such as the operation against former Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega in 1989. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the operation as a “law enforcement initiative,” asserting that Trump acted within his legal rights.
