Reactions to the Arrest of Nicolás Maduro
The hosts of “The View” shared varied responses regarding the recent arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan leader, by the U.S. military.
He was taken into custody at his residence in Caracas and transported out of Venezuela on a bold mission Saturday evening. By Monday, he had entered a “not guilty” plea in a New York courtroom.
“I think we can still celebrate that this cruel, corrupt dictator is leaving Venezuela!” one host remarked.
Some progressive voices have criticized how the Trump administration has handled such operations. Sunny Hostin didn’t hold back during Monday’s episode.
Hostin argued that the president was breaking international laws, questioning, “Isn’t anyone bothered by the piracy nature of our actions? It feels imperialistic.”
“We invade other nations and exploit their natural resources for our gain,” she elaborated. “And if this is permissible, what’s stopping someone like President Putin from going after Zelenskyy in Ukraine?”
Her remarks connected to Trump’s earlier comments on taking control of Venezuelan oil tankers and reclaiming oil drilling assets that had been nationalized by the Venezuelan government. She highlighted that Venezuela holds roughly 20% of the globe’s oil reserves, surpassing Saudi Arabia.
On the flip side, Ana Navarro expressed her relief, indicating that Maduro’s downfall had brought joy to many Venezuelans and Cubans living in South Florida.
“Today is a very happy day. Seeing a dictator who has oppressed the Venezuelan people for 25 years handcuffed was emotional for me. It truly brought tears to my eyes,” Navarro shared. “I think we can rejoice that this corrupt, murderous dictator is out of Venezuela!”
Maduro faces charges that include conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, drug importation, and possession of machine guns, among other allegations against the United States.
