As New Year’s resolutions begin to unfold, many individuals are exploring options like Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications for weight loss.
Bariatric surgeon Dr. Katelin Mirkin warns that these drugs come with risks, and depending on them for quick weight loss solutions might lead to significant issues.
“We’ve observed considerable rebound weight gain after patients stop these medications, especially if the discontinuation is sudden,” Mirkin noted.
Initially intended for diabetes management, medications like Wegovy and Ozempic are now increasingly sought after for weight loss. As the use of GLP-1s grows among Americans, doctors are gaining insights into the effects of stopping these drugs, particularly concerning weight regain.
While many tolerate GLP-1 medications without major problems, they do carry side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and slower digestion. These occur because the treatments work by slowing down gastrointestinal function and suppressing appetite.
“There are serious concerns, including pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, sarcopenia—which refers to muscle loss—and some rare risks of thyroid cancer,” Mirkin explained.
Overall, Mirkin mentioned that most patients generally tolerate these medications well. However, studies reveal that many discontinue them within a year, often leading to quick weight regain.
“Once you stop experiencing that nausea caused by the medication, it’s easy to revert to old habits,” she said. “The drugs slow down how your digestive system processes food, and without those side effects, you may not think twice about your eating habits.”
The reasons behind the weight regain after ceasing GLP-1s remain under investigation. Experts suggest it might be a mix of different factors.
“I encounter patients who experience intense hunger after they stop taking these medications. Some find initial success but can’t sustain it due to the cost or side effects,” she shared.
Many doctors believe that for patients, particularly those who are obese or have diabetes, the use of GLP-1 drugs may need to be long-term.
Mirkin emphasized that these medications shouldn’t be viewed as a quick solution for weight loss.
Patients are encouraged to combine these drugs with lifestyle modifications, such as increasing protein intake, engaging in strength training, and practicing mindful eating, although some might rely solely on the medication.
“Some weight regain occurs even in individuals who have made lifestyle changes,” Mirkin observed. “But your overall health will improve substantially if you can commit to healthier habits.”
