Sen. Rand Paul Critiques Trump’s Relationship with Lindsey Graham
Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) recently remarked that President Donald Trump seems “obsessed with Lindsey Graham,” particularly in the context of the U.S. operation relating to Venezuela. This sentiment was shared during comments made to Media Touch’s Asin Torabi.
Paul recalled a time after the 2016 presidential debate when the Trump family expressed their support for him, largely due to his stance on avoiding foreign wars. “That attracted me to Donald Trump,” Paul expressed, adding that despite his concerns about other matters, he often reassures himself that Trump is a better option compared to previous leaders. He reflected on the Bush family’s interventionist approach, saying, “They wanted to get involved in crazy wars overseas… We’re the ones who make the world safe for democracies.” Yet, he admitted feeling disappointed as he perceived Trump to be overly involved with Graham.
In a separate discussion, Paul took issue with J.D. Vance’s assertion that executing cartel members is an effective use of the military. His criticism suggests a more cautious approach to military action.
Paul described Trump’s unilateral decision to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro without Congressional approval as “contemptuous.” Meanwhile, Senator Graham, a known hawk from South Carolina, backed Trump’s stance. Paul pointed out that Graham had contacted Trump, challenging the president’s earlier resistance to regime change. “It’s puzzling how they convinced him this situation is different because it’s closer to home,” he noted.
During a press briefing, Paul humorously suggested that a law be established to limit Graham’s visits to the White House to “every other week,” with restrictions on meeting only with lower-level staff rather than the president. This light-hearted remark demonstrates the strained dynamics in their relationship.
Graham was recently seen engaging with Trump aboard Air Force One, highlighting their close ties. Paul also shared a photo on social media of himself with Trump, where Trump wore a hat inscribed with “Make Iran Great Again,” showcasing an unexpected branding twist during an incident involving Venezuela.
In light of the escalating situation, Venezuela has initiated a nationwide search for Maduro supporters following the recent military actions against him. Paul’s comments and reactions show a complex interplay of approval and disappointment regarding Trump’s foreign policy choices, especially his reliance on Graham.
Trump had endorsed Graham’s re-election last year, reinforcing their alliance, which continues to draw mixed reactions from various political corners.
