U.S. Representative Doug LaMalfa Passes Away at 65

Doug LaMalfa, a U.S. Representative from California, has died at 65. He served the 1st Congressional District in Northern California and held the position of chair for the Western Congressional Caucus.

With his passing, the Republican majority in the House is now 218-213. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer confirmed the news on social media.

In a heartfelt statement, Emmer expressed his sorrow, saying, “Jackie and I are devastated by the sudden death of our friend, Congressman Doug LaMalfa. Doug was a loving father and husband, and a loyal advocate for his constituents and rural America. Our prayers are with Doug’s wife Jill and their children.”

Known for his conservative stance, LaMalfa was also remembered as a considerate individual, respected by both reporters and colleagues.

Following his death and the resignation of Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, House Republicans now only need to lose two votes on party-line legislation to pass. This tight majority poses challenges as they work toward new legislative goals.

LaMalfa’s colleagues seemed taken aback by the news, as many tributes flowed in the morning after his death. Richard Hudson, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, remarked, “Doug was a principled conservative and a tireless advocate for the people of Northern California. He was never afraid to fight for rural communities, farmers, and working families. Doug brought grit, integrity, and conviction to everything he did in public service.”

Representative Young Kim, also from California, shared her reflections, stating, “Doug was not only a respected colleague but a genuinely kind and respectful man who treated everyone with warmth. His leadership and steady presence will be greatly missed.”

This news comes as the House Republicans gather for a day-long brainstorming session at the recently renamed Trump Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., where President Donald Trump addressed the members to kick off their agenda for the day.
