GOP Representative Jim Baird taken to the hospital following serious car accident, according to Trump.

Representative Jim Baird (R-Ind.) and his wife are in recovery following a serious car accident, as acknowledged by President Trump during a speech to House Republicans.

“I want to extend my congratulations to Congressman Jim Baird and his wife, who are both recovering from a car crash,” Trump stated. “They’ll be okay, but let’s hope they can leave the hospital soon, as it was a pretty terrible accident.” He added, “He’ll be fine. She’ll be fine. But it was a really bad incident.”

Details of Baird’s accident came at a time when news broke about the unexpected passing of Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) at 65.

The office of Rep. Baird has not responded to inquiries about the situation.

This incident adds complexity to the already slim Republican majority in the House, especially following LaMalfa’s death and the Monday resignation of former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

Also affecting Republican dynamics is Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who often votes against party lines, alongside the expectation that Democrats will win the upcoming seat in Texas’ 18th Congressional District following the runoff elections on January 31.

Baird has served in the House since 2019, representing Indiana’s 4th Congressional District, focusing on veteran affairs and agricultural issues.

President Trump expressed condolences for LaMalfa’s passing, a sentiment echoed by Republican leaders on Tuesday. The circumstances surrounding LaMalfa’s death remain unclear.

“He’s going to be okay, she’s going to be okay, but it was a serious incident,” Trump added during his remarks.

Baird’s situation has further strained the Republican House majority, currently sitting at 218-213.

“As you all know, I want to share my deep sadness over the loss of Congressman Doug LaMalfa, who passed away yesterday,” Trump said in his address to House Republicans at the rebranded Trump Kennedy Center.

“He was a key voice in the Western Caucus and a passionate advocate for water issues in California. He truly fought for those interests and cared deeply about children. Our thoughts are with his wife, Jill, and his entire family. He consistently voted in alignment with me.”

LaMalfa became the fourth member of the 119th Congress to pass away, following three Democratic members who died last year.

There are currently four vacancies in the House.
