House Republicans Propose Changes to Immigration System Amid Fraud Investigations

House Republicans are pushing to reform the U.S. immigration system in light of recent investigations into alleged fraud within Minnesota’s social service programs. Representative Wesley Hunt from Texas introduced a bill that aims to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and Somalia.

If the bill passes, refugees currently residing in the U.S. would need to voluntarily leave the country within 180 days.

“We need to ensure that those entering our country undergo proper screening. It’s evident that this isn’t happening,” Hunt stated. “Our goal is to address this issue effectively.”

Fraud Losses in Minnesota May Surpass $9 Billion

Recent estimates from federal authorities suggest that fraud losses in Minnesota could exceed $9 billion. The pressure is on as federal prosecutors investigate a scheme involving over $240 million stolen from the federal child nutrition program linked to a local nonprofit.

The inquiry has broadened to examine various state-run programs for possible fraud as well.

Governor Walz Faces Scrutiny Over Fraud Claims

Childcare providers benefiting from state funds, particularly within the Somali community, are also facing scrutiny. Under increasing pressure from the ongoing scandal, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has decided not to seek re-election, citing the need to focus on protecting residents from scams and political manipulation.

“Every moment spent on my own political interests detracts from protecting Minnesotans from criminals taking advantage of our generosity,” Walz remarked.

While he had earlier indicated that his administration was working to tackle the fraud issues, Walz argued that federal assessments might be exaggerating the extent of the problems.

“Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Tim Walz’s decision to step back speaks volumes,” Hunt noted. “His involvement suggests he knew more than he’s admitting, especially since he’s not running for re-election. There’s a lot that remains to be uncovered.” He believes the revocation of TPS is a crucial first step in rectifying the situation.

Legislative Efforts Linked to Broader Issues

Hunt’s initiative could also facilitate the Trump administration’s attempts to eliminate TPS for Somali immigrants in Minnesota. He emphasized that, drawing from his military experience, this bill addresses wider concerns about preventing the spread of Sharia law in the U.S.

“Having lived under Islamic law and served in the Middle East, I see this as a broader issue—keeping out those who harbor animosity toward our country,” Hunt said, adding that this bill aligns with President Trump’s objectives.

Currently, Hunt is campaigning for a Senate seat in Texas.
