Hilton Hotels Ends Relationship with Minneapolis Hotel Amid Controversy

Hilton Hotels announced on Tuesday that it is terminating its partnership with independently managed hotels in the Minneapolis area. This decision follows the release of video evidence that shows the hotel still denying accommodations to agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The timeline is pretty quick. On Tuesday morning, Nick Souter, a freelance journalist, attempted to book a room at the Hampton Inn by Hilton in Lakeville, Minnesota. The front desk staff informed him that the hotel remained closed to DHS and ICE personnel.

What’s interesting, though, is that the hotel’s management company, Everpeak Hospitality, had just issued an apology the previous day, claiming the matter was resolved and asserting that there was no discrimination involved. But the staff’s comments in the secretly recorded video seemed to undermine that statement.

In response to the situation, Hilton issued a public statement. They expressed concern over the video’s implications, stating that it raised doubts about whether the hotel met their standards and values. As a result, they announced the immediate termination of the franchise agreement, asserting their commitment to inclusivity.

Everpeak Hospitality also emphasized their dedication to welcoming all guests and aligning with brand standards and laws. Meanwhile, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, a shareholder in Hilton, praised the company for its swift response to the unfolding situation, acknowledging the efforts of the journalist who uncovered the issue.

Ackman noted that Hilton’s CEO, Chris Nassetta, acted promptly once made aware of the situation, and he expressed satisfaction with how it was handled.

Despite these developments, the matter isn’t fully settled. Previous allegations surfaced, revealing that staff at the Lakeville hotel reportedly told federal officials that they wouldn’t allow ICE or other immigration authorities to stay there. Video evidence contradicted earlier claims of resolution, leading Hilton to distance itself from Everpeak.
