Support for Trump’s Action Against Maduro Increases
CNN’s lead data analyst, Harry Enten, noted on Tuesday that backing for President Donald Trump’s decision to detain Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is on the rise.
Trump shared his strategy on Truth Social, where he received considerable accolades for the military operation. Enten referenced a recent poll by Reuters/Ipsos/Washington Post, indicating a noticeable uptick in American public opinion favoring Maduro’s ousting following the intervention. It’s interesting to see how quickly views can shift, right?
“This represents a significant change in the president’s preferences,” Enten remarked. “Initially, we had about 47% of Americans opposed to the idea of ousting Maduro, with only 21% in favor. Now, that figure has jumped to 37%, which is almost equal to the opposition at 38%.” It seems people really appreciate when foreign policy appears successful.
Retired General James Stavridis, a former NATO supreme commander, labeled the operation as “unusual” during an appearance on CNN’s “Smerconish.” He speculated that countries like Iran, Russia, and China would be “impressed by the military capabilities” displayed by the U.S.
“I really don’t think any of those armies could have conducted such an operation. The execution of locating, capturing, and transporting Maduro is exceptional. Having him alive with no casualties on the American side—this is definitely an unusual military mission,” Stavridis commented.
According to Reuters, 65% of Republicans backed the operation, although 54% expressed concern over the U.S.’s potential for deeper involvement in Venezuela.
Tucker Carlson, co-founder of the Daily Caller News Foundation, expressed gratitude on “The Tucker Carlson Show” for the outcome not resulting in a complete regime change. He mentioned, “I think it was wise to avoid toppling the entire government. While I don’t support it, the situations in Iraq, Libya, and Syria show how complicated things can get. Maintaining some kind of structure while ensuring it leans pro-American seems much more sensible.” There’s definitely something to be said for that caution.
The operation was executed by Delta Force, an elite unit of the U.S. Army, resulting in Maduro being brought to the U.S. He now faces four criminal charges, including allegations of narco-terrorism, to which he pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Monday.
